How to record audio from an app on Mac
Capture one app, system audio, or a microphone with TonePebble. Set up permissions, check your levels, and save a recording.
Requires macOS 15 or later.

Choose what to capture
Open TonePebble and choose New recording. To capture a single app, turn System Audio off. Leave the microphone off unless you want to record your voice too. Choose Add source, search for the app, and add it. Start playback in that app or use All running apps to find it.
Allow audio capture
Open Permissions in TonePebble and allow Screen & System Audio Recording. macOS uses that permission name even though TonePebble saves audio only. Reopen TonePebble if prompted. Microphone permission is needed only when you enable a microphone or audio input.
Check the signal before recording
Play the audio you want to capture and watch its source meter. Choose Test selected setup for an eight-second sample, then Play test. Check that the intended app is audible and other sources are off. This temporary test is not added to your library.
Record and save
Give the recording a useful name and choose Start Recording. Adjust volume or mute a source while recording. Use Mark to bookmark a moment, Pause for a break, or Split to start another part. Choose Stop & Save to keep the recording in your library.
System audio, apps, or a microphone?
- Whole Mac: enable System Audio.
- One application: disable System Audio and add that app as a source.
- Your voice: add an audio input and use headphones to avoid recording your speakers twice.
App selection covers the application, not an individual browser tab. Protected content may be unavailable. Choose sources before recording; their volume and mute controls remain available during capture.
If the recording is silent
Check that the app is playing, the channel is enabled and unmuted, and capture permission is active. Reopen TonePebble after a permission change and run the setup test again.
